THE LOWDOWN

TAYLOR FRITZ

World number 13 Taylor Fritz endured a little wobble against Mikhail Kukushkin on Saturday to take the match in three sets when it should have gone in two but he coped well considering his recent exploits. The 24-year-old beat Rafael Nadal in the final of Indian Wells just over a week ago to win a surprise first Masters title and only his second overall after claiming the 2019 Eastbourne International.

TOMMY PAUL

24-year-old Tommy Paul will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 34th after an impressive three-set victory over Karen Khachanov on Saturday. The American won his firs ATP title at the Stockholm Open late last season with an excellent victory over the defending champion from 2019 Denis Shapovalov and he recently stunned Alexander Zverev in three sets at Indian Wells.

THE PREDICTION

This will be a tough match for the Miami Open crowd to back between two Americans in the form of their lives. World number 13 Taylor Fritz brings the confidence of winning a surprising but altogether deserved first Masters title last Sunday with a first victory over Rafael Nadal, but Tommy Paul continues to exceed his previous levels. The pair faced-off twice in quick succession late last season, with Fritz beating Paul on his way to the St. Petersburg Open final and Paul returning the favour on his way to a first ATP title at the Stockholm Open. Given his recent exploits, backing Fritz to win at least a set looks to be the sensible pick for an accumulator here but backing him outright should otherwise come through. It would not be a surprise to see Paul snatch this, though.
