World number 12 Taylor Fritz struggled through another five-set marathon at the Australian Open, overcoming Facundo Diaz Acosta on Sunday in a match he should be blasting through. The American was stunned at this stage of the tournament in five sets last season, losing to a pumped home hopeful in Alexei Popyrin, but he proved that he is capable of rolling through to the latter stages at the US Open later last season until a quarter-final capitulation against Novak Djokovic.
World number 97 Hugo Gaston made full use of his second chance as a lucky loser on Monday, replacing Borna Gojo late to oust Roberto Carballes Baena. The 23-year-old is an engaging, perennial cult hero who should be able to bring the Melbourne crowd around to his side early on to make this a potential thriller. Fritz, at his best, should be beating Gaston in three sets – particularly as the diminutive Frenchman is far from his own top level – but it is hard to back the American with confidence right now. The sensible move is taking Fritz to win outright but that in itself makes taking Gaston to snatch a set tempting.
