THE PREDICTION

World number nine Taylor Fritz looked in good shape at the Cincinnati Open last week before a humbling 6-4 6-0 defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic displayed the gulf between the top and bottom of the current top 10. The 25-year-old looked set to blossom on grass this summer but he suffered a second round exit to Mikael Ymer in five sets, his second such result of the season after also falling in five to Alexei Popyrin in Melbourne. Fritz has, at least, either won or lost to the eventual finalist in each of his last four tournaments after claiming a second ATP title this season at the Atlanta Open late last month and he should have far too much for veteran Steve Johnson, who has just two wins on tour this year. The world number 186 only recently won a Challenger event in Lexington to prove his staying power but Fritz has won each of their last three meetings to lead their head-to-head 4-2. Four of their six matches have seen sets go both ways, with six tiebreaks amongst 18 sets, but the sensible option is taking Fritz to come through in three here.
