THE LOWDOWN

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas is the last of four players that could end up the new number one after the Australian Open but the Greek would need to win his maiden major title to do so, or vastly out-perform Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud. The 24-year-old enjoyed a confidence-boosting experience at the United Cup to start 2023 off, winning all four of his singles matches in impressive fashion as well as his Mixed Doubles outings with Maria Sakkari as Greece reached the semi-finals. Tsitsipas lost in four sets to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev here last season but his best run at a Grand Slam was also perhaps his worst day, and something that has had long-lasting affects on his game, when he lost the 2021 Roland-Garros final from two sets up to Novak Djokovic.

THE PREDICTION

World number 64 Quentin Halys is in the form of his career and set to break his career-high ranking before he takes to court to face Tsitsipas. The 26-year-old took Djokovic to two tight tiebreaks in defeat at Adelaide 1 at the start of the season but a defeat to Jenson Brooksby in the same manner this week in Auckland suggests he is still some way off beating the Greek in this first meeting. Still, Tsitsipas rarely starts a major tournament well and there have been enough shock exits in recent years to treat this match with caution. Back the Greek to win outright here but consider adding at least a tiebreak outside of an accumulator.
