THE PREDICTION

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas will have to go straight back into the lion’s den late on Tuesday after resuming his third round match against Lorenzo Sonego earlier today. The 24-year-old overcame a boisterous opponent and a partisan atmosphere well to reach the round of 16 without yet dropping a set but he will face another home hopeful in Lorenzo Musetti under the lights on Centre Court after the Italian edge past Frances Tiafoe in three. Both players had to resume play after poor weather delayed their matches overnight but there is no doubt Musetti will be feeling the more fatigued after a physical and emotional battle with Tiafoe, so the Rome crowd will be vital to his chances of bettering his breakthrough run here in 2020 when he burst onto the scene with a run to the last 16.

Tsitsipas leads Musetti 4-0 in a convincing head-to-head record but each of their last three encounters have needed a deciding set, including in five at Roland-Garros last season and in the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month. Back Tsitsipas to win outright here but it would not be a surprise to see Musetti claim his first win in this match-up in Rome.
