THE LOWDOWN

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas is the last remaining player capable of ending the Australian Open as the new number one after Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud dropped out of the draw. The 24-year-old passed a significant test in ending Tallon Griekspoor’s winning streak in straight sets on Friday, saving the one break point he faced in an assured performance. The Greek beat Matteo Berrettini, Borna Coric and Grigor Dimitrov whilst representing his nation at the United Cup to start off the year strongly and he has reached the semi-finals here in three of his last four appearances, losing to Daniil Medvedev in each of the last two.

JANNIK SINNER

World number 16 Jannik Sinner has so far flown under the radar in Melbourne but he almost never reached this blockbuster match after dropping the first two sets of a five-set slog against Marton Fucsovics on Friday. The 21-year-old reached the quarter-finals at three Grand Slams last season, losing his first to Tsitsipas in three sets here in Melbourne before two incredible losing performances in five sets to eventual champions Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and the match of the season against Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.

THE PREDICTION

This match is the first straight-up shoot-out between genuine title contenders on the Men’s side of the Australian Open and it should be an incredible battle to behold. Stefanos Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head 4-1 after two straight-sets wins last season here and at the Rome Masters but Sinner is improving all the time and especially since last summer, where he came as close as anyone to beating two eventual Grand Slam champions. Tsitsipas, however, has started 2023 off with a fiercer confidence than we have seen for some time and the Greek is yet to lose after seven matches. Sinner would be the favourite in this tussle on grass and one day soon this rivalry should be a little more level but Melbourne suits the world number four, as does this increasingly open draw. Back Tsitsipas to win outright with sets likely to go both ways.
