THE LOWDOWN

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas has found more joy playing doubles in recent weeks than the singles as he and Feliciano Lopez recently won the Mexican Open before a run to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last time out. The Greek is clearly trying to gather as much match practice as possible ahead of a promising clay season after he blitzed the field this time last season to win a first Masters title at the Monte-Carlo Open. Tsitsipas’ most recent of seven career ATP titles came soon after at the Lyon Open, also on clay, and he took the first two sets in the Roland-Garros final before Novak Djokovic fought back to win in devastating fashion.

J.J. WOLF

23-year-old J.J. Wolf has enjoyed some strong form over the last few weeks to move within touching distance of his career-high ATP world ranking of 120th set back in 2020. The American beat in-form Daniel Altmaier in straight sets on Thursday after a strong qualifying campaign saw him oust Sam Querrey and he took Roberto Bautista Agut to three sets at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago.

THE PREDICTION

Despite J.J. Wolf’s recent exploits there is recent evidence that this match-up is only going one way. The American shocked Lorenzo Sonego in three sets at the Mexican Open to reach the round of 16, where 23-year-old Tsitsipas handed him second-set bagel in a comprehensive victory. The Greek is still occasionally fallible as he recovers from the elbow surgery he underwent over the winter and the mental scars from his capitulation at Roland-Garros but back him to win this in straight sets.
