THE LOWDOWN

World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas’ fitness was under question ahead of his opening ATP Finals clash with Jannik Sinner on Sunday but he was well beaten anyway by an emphatic performance. The 25-year-old has won just one ATP title this season at the Los Cabos Open but he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in January to prove his mettle in these conditions, although it has arguably been over a year since we saw his best tennis. Tsitsipas finally found some form last week at the Paris Masters, beating fellow ATP Finalist Alexander Zverev amongst other top players en-route to a three-set semi-final exit by Grigor Dimitrov.

World number eight Holger Rune impressed on his ATP Finals debut in yet another three-set thriller against Novak Djokovic. The Dane has finally been pegged back 3-2 in their head-to-head after leading 2-1 since stunning the Serb in the Paris Masters final last season, with a defeat to Djokovic in the quarter-finals last week also seeing a decider. 20-year-old Rune has been struggling with form and fitness practically ever since an impressive run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July but there have been some encouraging signs under new coach Boris Becker.

THE PREDICTION

Holger Rune leads Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-0 in their head-to-head record, with his first win over the Greek that incredible upset at Roland-Garros last summer that signalled his rising star. Both players are far from their best at present, with Rune’s issues apparently more physical versus Tsitsipas’ seemingly mental block on court this season, but this is a must-win match with the loser all-but mathematically eliminated from the ATP Finals. Tsitsipas has displayed the better consistency in recent weeks but his straight-sets defeat to Sinner came too easily for a player of his stature, even against the inspired home favourite in Turin. Back Rune to win at least a set as the likelier to win of two players who both look like missing out on the semi-finals.

BETTING TIP: HOLGER RUNE TO WIN A SET
