THE PREDICTION

World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of nine players who could still feasibly qualify for the ATP Finals next month but a player of his quality should have won that race by now. The 25-year-old won the ATP Finals in 2019 to cap off a meteoric rise up the rankings but he has struggled to build on that since, with his past two seasons seeing a considerable decline. A three-set exit to Ugo Humbert in the third round of the Shanghai Masters last week was his fifth tournament in a row in which he has failed to win back-to-back matches since winning the Los Cabos Open in August but he was at least saved a rematch with his US Open vanquisher, Dominic Stricker, after Botic van de Zandschulp came back to beat the youngster on Wednesday. 28-year-old Van de Zandschulp is far better than his current deflated world ranking of 67th suggests but the Dutchman has struggled for form ever since finishing runner-up to Holger Rune at the Munich Open for a second year running in April.

If both players were at their best Tsitsipas could be backed to win this first encounter in tight straight sets but neither player brings much recent form into the equation. A tiebreak seems likely, and taking that option in lieu of a result could be the shrewd move here, but otherwise take Tsitsipas to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
