THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka won his third Grand Slam title here in 2016 to cap off a remarkable three years of peak tennis amidst an illustrious career. The 38-year-old has worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months, though, to drag himself back inside the top 50 after several years in the wilderness and he looks overjoyed to be back in New York and able to compete again at this level. A four-set victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry backed up a strong opener over Yoshihito Nishioka but this is a significant step-up in quality against world number six Jannik Sinner, who has won each of their last three encounters to lead 3-2 – including two straight sets results this season in Rotterdam and Indian Wells. 22-year-old Sinner won his first Masters title in his fourth ATP 1000 final in Toronto three weeks ago and after an understandable early exit in Cincinnati he looks ready for a deep run this fortnight. A quarter-final rematch with Carlos Alcaraz is on the cards and that should be motivation alone after the pair played out the best match of 2022 at that stage last summer.

Wawrinka beat Sinner in four sets here back in 2019 but the Italian is at a career-high ATP world ranking of sixth for a reason. Back Sinner to win outright with four sets a distinct possibility but three likelier.
