THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka impressed at the Italian Open last week with a run to the round of 16 eventually halted by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The 37-year-old is a three-time Grand Slam champion from the Australian Open in 2014, Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 and six of his total 16 ATP titles have come on clay, including his most recent at the 2017 Geneva Open. Wawrinka finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here soon after, the only Grand Slam final he has lost.

World number 139 Corentin Moutet has failed to win a tour-level match since a marathon five-set defeat to Sebastian Korda in the second round of the Australian Open back in January but the Frenchman is probably at his best in these conditions. The 23-year-old is an entertaining player to watch but often his short fuse becomes his downfall the longer a match takes and Wawrinka has been around the block enough to not get too involved in his opponents’ antics. Still, Moutet has a good record at Roland-Garros and he beat Wawrinka in three sets in their only previous meeting at the Qatar Open back in 2020. Take both players to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance in what could well go to five.
