33-year-old Sorana Cirstea is just six places from breaking her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st, set over a decade ago on tour, after her thrilling run to the US Open earlier this month. The Romanian stunned Elenas Rybakina in three sets in the third round and then blasted past Belinda Bencic to make the quarter-finals before Karolina Muchova proved too hot to handle and she should be considered a serious title threat here off the back of it. A three-set opener over Claire Liu is a reasonably solid start and Cirstea can take great confidence into this round of 16 clash with Katerina Siniakova, over whom she holds a 3-0 head-to-head at tour level. World number 90 Siniakova won the fourth WTA title of her career at the Bad Homburg Open in June but she brought a six-match losing streak into Ningbo with just one win since lifting that trophy. A straight-sets opener over Elizabeth Mandlik will boost her confidence but this looks too steep a challenge right now. Back Cirstea to win outright.
