World number 31 Donna Vekic came back from a tight tiebreak down to stun Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, in her first match since Melbourne, to blow the Dubai Masters draw wide open. The 27-year-old has been struggling to find any sort of consistency practically since the end of the grass swing last summer but a recent tight exit to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semi-finals of the Linz Open suggested better was on the way and this huge result will boost her confidence to no end. 33-year-old Sorana Cirstea beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Tuesday to pull within one win of returning to her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st, first set way back in 2011, and her desperate attempts to finally break the top 20 over the past few seasons have been nothing short of remarkable. The Romanian won their most recent meeting from a set down at the Birmingham Classic in 2022 but Vekic has earned at least a set in each of their five matches played over the past 11 years.
