THE LOWDOWN

SOFIA KENIN

23-year-old Sofia Kenin won the Australian Open in 2020 in a comeback victory over Garbine Muguruza and she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek’s stunning run at Roland-Garros later that year. The former world number four struggled for form throughout 2021 and then suffered a few unfortunate injuries to miss the last third of the season but a quarter-final defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty at Adelaide 1 last week is a good sign.

MADISON KEYS

World number 51 Madison Keys won her first WTA title since 2019 at Adelaide 2 with a comprehensive victory over Alison Riske on Saturday. The 26-year-old reached the US Open final in 2017 to finish runner-up to Sloane Stephens and she has reached at least the quarter-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. Keys set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh in 2016, a year after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

THE PREDICTION

This could be one of the best matches of the first round between 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and in-form Madison Keys. Keys has won each of the last two meetings between the two at the Cincinnati Open and US Open in 2019, with Kenin taking their first meeting in three sets at the Rome Masters earlier that year. 26-year-old Keys’ Adelaide 2 victory via wins over Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina looks menacing form that should challenge the second week at least this campaign. There is probably three sets in this and that makes taking Keys to win at least one of them the sensible move in what could be a thriller if Kenin can finally find her best tennis.
