22-year-old Emma Navarro claimed the biggest ranking win of her career on Thursday with an excellent three-set victory over Maria Sakkari and she will break inside the top 50 on tour for the first time for her efforts no matter the outcome here. Taking out the fierce but equally vulnerable Sakkari is not too dissimilar a test to tacking former world number four Sofia Kenin here but Navarro will have to share the support in San Diego, after enjoying the lion’s share all week. 24-year-old Kenin conceded just five games to Anastasia Potapova on Thursday to maintain a hugely encouraging run this week and she has already put out a young American underdog in Katie Volynets to look the slight favourite here. Kenin’s best tennis is still of top 10 quality and it feels like reaching a first final since 2020 would be the driving catalyst for changes after suffering so many setbacks in recent years. Navarro is an outlier who is clearly improving on tour but back Kenin to need this more to edge through the winner.
