THE PREDICTION

World number seven Coco Gauff first burst onto the scene here with a run to the round of 16 as a 15 year old in 2019 and she could better that with the right draw this fortnight. The 19-year-old beat her doubles partner world number four Jessica Pegula to reach the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International this week but a straight-sets defeat to Madison Keys on Friday throws some more doubt over what has been a tricky season so far. Former world number four Sofia Kenin is slowly, but more steadily these days, working her way back up the rankings after spending much of the last few years in the wilderness. The 24-year-old qualified well this week to make the main draw at Wimbledon but she has struggled here in the past despite winning the Australian Open in 2020 and finishing runner-up at Roland-Garros later that year. Gauff’s ability on grass should see her through what could end up a thriller here but it could come tighter than it should. The teenager beat Kenin in straight sets en-route to the Auckland Classic title earlier this season and she can be backed to win outright here.
