THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Simona Halep has not played since losing to Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of Indian Wells last month but the 30-year-old will be a serious and creditable threat to the Madrid Open title on her favoured clay. The Romanian won the 23rd WTA title of her career at the start of the season at Melbourne and she has two Grand Slams and six Masters titles amongst that number, including Roland-Garros in 2018, the Rome Masters in 2020 and back-to-back titles here in 2016 and 2017. World number 40 Shuai Zhang won the third WTA title of her career from out of the blue with a brilliant campaign at the Lyon Open back in February. The 33-year-old is solid across all surfaces and she currently ties Halep 2-2 in their head-to-head record, with Halep winning their most recent encounter on her way to the Wimbledon title in 2019. However, the Chinese star is yet to face the Romanian in her element on the clay and backing Halep to win outright looks the sensible move here.
