THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Elena Rybakina went under the radar all the way to the final here last summer and she stunned SW19 with an impressive comeback over Ons Jabeur to win her maiden Grand Slam title. One year on it is no longer a surprise to see her ranked at world number three as the Kazakh’s powerful, measured and deceptive playstyle has won her further titles at Indian Wells and the Italian Open this season as well as a second Grand Slam final reached in Melbourne, where she finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka. Rybakina has been struggling to recuperate from a virus that saw her withdraw from Roland-Garros earlier this month and she comes into Wimbledon underprepared on grass with just two matches managed on the surface this month. This is a seriously tricky opener against former world number 30 Shelby Rogers as the American is well capable of upsetting anybody on her day, brief as those days are becoming on tour.

The 30-year-old takes a four-match losing streak into the first round but she beat Rybakina on grass at the Libema Open last summer to see the Kazakh lead 3-2 in their head-to-head – although Rybakina leads 2-1 on grass after wins here and in Berlin in 2021. Back Rybakina to win outright here for caution’s sake and leave this match out of any accumulators.
