THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis was part of a memorable five-set thriller with Andy Murray in the second round here last season, taking the first two sets before an incredible comeback by the Brit in a match that finished north of 3am. The Aussie never really recovered from that disappointment in a hugely frustrating 2023 season and it remains to be seen how he copes with a return to the scene in this tough opening draw against in-form Sebastian Ofner, who brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 37th into his Australian Open debut. Ofner, also 27, reached the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open at the start of 2024 to build on a strong end to last season that saw a huge run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros and a late drive on indoor hardcourts.

Meanwhile, Kokkinakis brings a three-match losing streak into Melbourne after a surprisingly poor start to 2024, particularly in his home town of Adelaide where he picked up his first title two years ago. The home crowd will do their utmost on the John Cain Arena on Tuesday but the sensible call is taking Ofner to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. This looks a decent candidate for five sets.

TIP: SEBASTIAN OFNER TO WIN A SET
