THE LOWDOWN

SEBASTIAN KORDA

After an emphatic victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round of the Miami Open, Sebastian Korda came perilously close to losing to another Spaniard in Albert Ramos-Vinolas. 21-year-old Korda dropped the first set and the survived a tight second-set tiebreak to edge past Ramos-Vinolas as he continues to seek out more consistency from a clear future top 5 ability. Korda won his first ATP title at the Emilia-Romagna Open last summer.

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

World number 48 Miomir Kecmanovic is possibly in the form if his young career this season after a year or so in the wilderness, with Saturday’s straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime a huge statement of intent at the Miami Open. The 22-year-old beat another top 10 player in Matteo Berrettini on his way to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells two weeks ago. Kecmanovic’s only ATP title to date came at the 2020 Kitzbuhel Open on clay.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating first meeting between two players with vast potential. Floridian native Sebastian Korda will be backed to the hilt here but it remains to be seen if his struggle against Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Saturday will improve his level or leave a way in for Miomir Kecmanovic, whose victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime is a big statement. Kecmanovic took a set in a defeat to eventual Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals two weeks ago and his performances so far in Miami suggest backing him to win at least one here is the wise move, leaving the winner up to chance.
