THE LOWDOWN

SEBASTIAN BAEZ

World number 37 Sebastian Baez overcame a stern challenge from Tallon Griekspoor on Tuesday in three sets to reach the second round of the Italian Open on his debut. The Argentine won his first ATP title last month at the Estoril Open, beating the likes of Marin Cilic, Frances Tiafoe and defending champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev defended his Madrid Open title right until the final, where he was outplayed by Carlos Alcaraz in two comfortable sets. The 25-year-old is still struggling to find his world-beating form from last season, where he won two Masters titles, two further ATP titles, a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a second ATP Finals trophy.

THE PREDICTION

This is a real banana skin for Alexander Zverev coming in from a disheartening defeat to future world number one Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Open. 21-year-old Sebastian Baez has already gone toe-to-toe with Stefanos Tsitsipas this season and impressed in a four-set defeat at the Australian Open and he is at his best on the clay, where Zverev can sometimes struggle away from the high-altitude of Madrid. Backing Baez to win at least a set would be a shrewd move here but the sensible call remains taking Zverev to win through eventually.
