THE LOWDOWN

SARA SORRIBES TORMO

World number 47 Sara Sorribes Tormo frustrated Daria Kasatkina throughout a lengthy three-set duel on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament for a third time. The 25-year-old came into some of the best form of career last season to reach the last eight at the Miami Open and Canadian Open before losing to eventual runners-up Bianca Andreescu and Karolina Pliskova, respectively.

JESSICA PEGULA

28-year-old Jessica Pegula will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 12th if she reaches the semi-finals of the Madrid Open and she looks one of the title contenders here after an excellent straight-set victory over Bianca Andreescu. In-form Pegula reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on her favoured hardcourt surface back in January before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty and she more recently made the semi-finals of the Miami Open before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

THE PREDICTION

This is a really intriguing match to call against the grain, with Sara Sorribes Tormo winning their only tour level meeting at Indian Wells in 2019 and a qualifying match on clay back in 2016. The Spaniard will be backed to the hilt by a partisan crowd in Madrid but Jessica Pegula is tough enough to deal with the noise and she should be buoyant after her results this campaign. Pegula’s harder-hitting game should also be favoured by the conditions in Madrid but Sorribes Tormo is enjoying the week of her career so far and that is a powerful force to have to stop in front of home fans. Back Pegula to win outright, or to win at least a set inside an accumulator.
