THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Roman Safiullin will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 36th after edging past two tough foes in third seed Ben Shelton and home favourite Alexei Popyrin. The Russian stunned Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets en-route to the round of 16 at the Paris Masters late last season to cap off an excellent year that also saw him ghost through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Safiullin faces another breakthrough star of 2023 in Matteo Arnaldi, who impressed on clay before reaching the round of 16 at the US Open on his debut and helping Italy to win their first Davis Cup title in November. The 22-year-old has also seen both of his matches go to a decider so far in Brisbane, beating Marton Fucsovics and Lukas Klein, to suggest this first meeting with Safiullin should see three sets. Consider that option as a one off but otherwise back the Russian to earn at least a set with the more impressive week so far.

TIP: ROMAN SAFIULLIN TO WIN A SET
