THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Andy Murray won three of his 14 ATP Masters titles here in Shanghai with two back-to-back 2010-11 and a third claimed in his career-best season in 2016. The 36-year-old has fought tooth-and-nail to get back inside the top 40 on tour, his highest place since career-saving hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, but recent results have been poor by his standards. A three-set exit to Alex de Minaur at the China Open last week saw him miss out on three match points for some encouragement but this is no gimme against Roman Safiullin, who set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 41st this week after finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Chengdu Open. 26-year-old Safiullin came close to beating Zverev in a tight three-setter in his first final on tour and a recent run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon is proof of the level he is finally finding on tour after initially promising more as a junior.

Murray beat Safiullin in three sets this time last season at the Basel Open but taking the Brit to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to lean here in keeping with his recent results.
