THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Holger Rune will come into the US Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of fourth after making back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon but he brings a three-match losing streak to New York. The Dane has been struggling various fitness issues this season with cramping, wrist and now back problems which saw him retire in the second set of his match against Mackenzie McDonald in Cincinnati last week and it remains to be seen how he will cope this fortnight – particularly in the five-set format. World number 64 Roberto Carballes Baena won his second ATP title at the Marrakech Open on his favoured clay back in April in what has perhaps been his best season on tour, at least in terms of consistent performances. The Spaniard beat Rune in their first encounter early last season but he met a totally different prospect at Wimbledon, losing in straight sets. Rune’s fitness makes leaving this match out of an accumulator the wise move but otherwise take him to win in straight sets.
