THE LOWDOWN

QIANG WANG

Former world number 12 Qiang Wang missed almost half of last season after the Tokyo Olympic Games and she is yet to win a match in 2022 in her return to the sport. The 30-year-old won two WTA titles back in 2018 in her native China and she set her best Grand Slam result with a quarter-final exit at the US Open in 2019.

COCO GAUFF

Coco Gauff set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 16th this week after a run to the semi-finals of Adelaide 2. The 17-year-old lost to eventual champion Madison Keys on Friday and previously to eventual Adelaide 1 champion Ash Barty in three sets to show for an exceedingly high level coming into the Australian Open. Gauff set her best rand Slam result at Roland-Garros last season in a quarter-final exit to, again, eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

THE PREDICTION

17-year-old Coco Gauff should be considered a genuine contender for the Australian Open title here after a strong couple of weeks in the warm-up events. She beat Qiang Wang twice last year in straight sets to win the Emilia-Romagna Open and a second round clash at Roland-Garros which suggests a straight-sets victory here is a reasonable outcome against an opponent with so few games behind her.
