20-year-old Philip Sekulic qualified without dropping a set to make his Masters debut in Shanghai, coming in on a career-high ATP world ranking of 292nd. The Aussie beat Nuno Borges on his ATP tour debut at the Chengdu Open last week and he took a set from world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti before defeat in the round of 16, although this Lorenzo should be much tougher fare. World number 56 Lorenzo Sonego is much better than his current ranking suggests but a 23-24 record for 2023 reflects a hugely erratic and largely disappointing season so far. The 28-year-old beat world number 22 Nicolas Jarry in the Davis Cup group stages last month but an opening defeat to word number 200 Alexis Galarneau that week certainly leaves the door ajar for an upset here. A three-set defeat to Ugo Humbert at the China Open on Thursday suggests the Italian is playing well enough to avoid that but with an outright call the only sensible option consider taking Sekulic to earn at least a set outside of an accumulator.
