THE LOWDOWN

PETRA MARTIC

World number 58 Petra Martic played well to beat in-form Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets on Thursday and the high altitude conditions in Madrid suit her powerful serve. The 31-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open this time last summer before a three-set defeat to eventual champion Karolina Pliskova and she set her best Grand Slam exit at Roland-Garros in 2019 with a run to the quarter-finals.

AMANDA ANISIMOVA

World number 33 Amanda Anisimova beat the third seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets on Thursday to extend her incredible record over the Belarusian to 4-0. 20-year-old Anisimova won her second WTA tour title at the start of the season at Melbourne 2, with her first coming on her favoured clay at the Bogota Open in 2019. Anisimova burst onto the world stage later that summer with a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros.

THE PREDICTION

Martic was the winner of their only previous match on the clay back in 2019 at the Charleston Open but it took three sets to oust the teenager who would then go on to reach the last four at Roland-Garros. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Anisimova took their first meeting at the Cincinnati Open in 2018 and after her assured victory over Aryna Sabalenka this match looks to be on her racket. Martic’s serve suits the conditions but Anisimova has already put away one big server and she can be backed to come through the outright winner here.
