THE PREDICTION

This could be the match of the day on Sunday between two former Grand Slam champions. World number 25 Jelena Ostapenko won Roland-Garros in 2017 and after a few seasons in the wilderness she has come up close to breaking back inside the top 10 on tour with runs like her quarter-final exit at the Australian Open in January proof of what she is capable. A three-set victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich is a great result for an opening match and it has taken the likes of world number three Jessica Pegula and number two Aryna Sabalenka to oust her from her last two tournaments. Former world number two Kvitova won her two major titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 and after a fairly troubling few seasons on tour the Czech has started 2023 well, beating the likes of Pegula and Elena Rybakina so far. A straight-sets victory over Elizabeth Mandlik was expected and it suggests that both players come into this enticing 10th meeting with each other at good levels.

Kvitova leads Ostapenko 5-4 in their head-to-head record after most recently beating the Latvian to win the Eastbourne International on grass last summer but Ostapenko won their match around this time last year in Dubai on her way to the title there. The slow hardcourt conditions at Indian Wells probably better-suit Ostapenko’s relentless hitting but Kvitova is better-equipped than most to redirect that power. Back Ostapenko to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
