THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thriller on Sunday between two unlikely Cincinnati Open finalists, at least in 2022. Former world number two Petra Kvitova and former number four Caroline Garcia have faced each other eight times over the years, with Kvitova leaving their head-to-head 5-3, but they have not played since 2019 since which both players have seen their form dwindle before enjoying renaissances this year. 32-year-old Kvitova came back from a set down to oust an impressive Madison Keys on Saturday, backing up great results over Ajla Tomljanovic and Ons Jabeur, whilst Garcia has overcome stuttering heavyweights like Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka in three sets and one of the pre-tournament favourites in Jessica Pegula. The Frenchwoman beat Kvitova here in 2015 but Kvitova has won each of their last two matches on US hardcourts and fine margins like these could be the difference in a tightly contested final.

Kvitova owns a remarkable 29 WTA titles that gives her an experienced edge but Garcia is also a Masters champion. Notably, both players have won roughly three quarters of the finals in which they have played, suggesting this could come down to the wire. Back Kvitova to win at least a set as the just-about likelier champion but consider taking the match to need a decider here to leave the winner up to chance.
