THE PREDICTION

World number nine Petra Kvitova beat former Canada Masters champion Camila Giorgi in three sets late on Wednesday for an impressive start to her Montreal campaign. The 33-year-old recently produced a near faultless run to the Berlin Open title on her favoured grass in June and her surprise form en-route to the Miami Open title back in March bodes well for her chances here. World number 13 Belinda Bencic started 2023 as one of the form players on hardcourts, picking up two WTA titles in Abu Dhabi and Adelaide, and she has looked strong back on the surface over the last two weeks. The 26-year-old overcame up-and-comer Alycia Parks in three sets on Wednesday to look competitive in Montreal but she trails Kvitova 4-2 in their head-to-head, with all six matches coming on hardcourts. This is a very tough call considering Kvitova’s flip-flop form between hot and cold this season but her opening win suggests this is more a hot than cold week. Take the Czech to earn at least a set as the likelier victor to leave the result up to chance.
