THE LOWDOWN

ONS JABEUR

World number 10 Ons Jabeur beat in-form Belinda Bencic in three sets on Monday to gain revenge for her defeat to the Swiss, also in three, at the Charleston Open last month. The 27-year-old took Paula Badosa to three sets before a defeat at the Stuttgart Open last week and she beat Amanda Anisimova in the Charleston semi-finals for some serious form. Jabeur won her first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic last summer on grass.

SIMONA HALEP

Former world number one Simona Halep is yet to drop a set this week at the Madrid Open, with an assured victory over pre-tournament favourite Paula Badosa on Saturday backed up by a solid display against Coco Gauff on Monday. The 30-year-old won the 23rd WTA title of her career at the start of the season in Melbourne and those titles include two from the Madrid Open in 2016 and 2017. Halep won her first Grand Slam title on clay at Roland-Garros in 2018 and she is fast-becoming a clear contender for Paris at the end of this month.

THE PREDICTION

Halep beat Jabeur in straight sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February to take the lead in their head-to-head record 2-1 and on clay she should be even tougher to break down. There is no doubt that Jabeur’s win over Belinda Bencic is an improvement on her already excellent form on clay this swing but Halep’s defeat of Paula Badosa in the second round looked a dress rehearsal for the title and she is certainly the player to beat. Back Halep to win outright here with Jabeur well capable of forcing a decider.
