THE PREDICTION

World number seven Ons Jabeur won the Charleston Open this time last month with a spotless campaign but she suffered an unfortunate injury in the semi-finals in Stuttgart that saw her miss out on the chance to defend her title at the Madrid Open. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here last season but it remains to be seen how she fares in this incredibly tough opener before we can get carried away with her chances at emulating that run. Former world number two Paula Badosa came back from a set down to beat Anna-Lena Friedsam on Wednesday but she should be better for the early scare, just as she was in Madrid two weeks ago when she upset Coco Gauff in straight sets. The 25-year-old is struggling with confidence on court but she looks every bit as effective on clay when everything clicks into gear.

In a tricky call between two elite players suffering form and fitness issues, three sets could be the suitably cautious way to avoid siding with either one. Otherwise, back Badosa to earn at least a set - as she has done in each of their three tour encounters to lead 2-1 in their head-to-head.
