World number seven Novak Djokovic was in a proper tussle with Vasek Pospisil in the first set of their quarter-final but he came through a tiebreak well to break the Canadian’s spirit and win through in two. The former world number one has won two titles this year in Rome and a 21st Grand Slam title at Wimbledon but even with the 2000 ranking points denied him by the controversial ban at SW19 he would still be ranked fourth in the world behind Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and Rafael Nadal. 25-year-old Roman Safiullin will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 92nd no matter the outcome here after an excellent week in Tel Aviv. Victory over Arthur Rinderknech on Friday is a great result for the Russian but anything other than a straight-sets victory for Djokovic here would be a huge shock.
