THE PREDICTION

World number one Novak Djokovic conceded just three games to Roman Safiullin on Tuesday to make a big statement of intent at Monte-Carlo, a tournament in which he has struggled more than most on the calendar. The 36-year-old two-time former Monte-Carlo champion has failed to win back-to-back matches in each of his last three appearances at this prestigious event, last season losing to next opponent Lorenzo Musetti from a set up at this exact stage to suggest this could be a thrilling clash on Thursday.

World number 24 Musetti beat Arthur Fils in straight sets on Tuesday to back-up an excellent upset over Taylor Fritz, proving both that he is one of the most naturally gifted clay-courters on tour whilst also one of the streakier, confidence players. The 22-year-old has endured a woeful past eight or so months on the hardcourt swing but he looks a credible threat to Djokovic in these conditions, famously taking the Serb to five sets before defeat in their first encounter at Roland-Garros three years ago. Backing Djokovic to win outright remains the advisable, sensible call but Musetti has earned at least a set in each of their clay-court encounters to suggest a one-off on the Italian to do so here could be the shrewd way to avoid a result.

TIP: LORENZO MUSETTI TO WIN A SET
