THE LOWDOWN

36-year-old Novak Djokovic will end the year as the world number one for a record eighth time after beating Holger Rune in three tight sets, just over a week on from doing so in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters. The Serb takes a 19-match winning streak into this potential thriller with Jannik Sinner, over whom he holds a convincing 3-0 head-to-head, with one less record to worry about as he targets a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title this week. Djokovic’s victory in Paris last time out was his 97th ATP title overall and it is very conceivable that he could end his career with the most overall in the Men’s game, with Jimmy Connors’ 109 titles to beat.

World number four Jannik Sinner thoroughly enjoyed his ATP Finals debut proper on Sunday with an assured victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 21-year-old will be backed to the hilt this week as the home favourite in Turin and stands a huge chance now of making the semi-finals at least with Holger Rune far from his bullish best at present. Sinner claimed his maiden Masters title in Toronto in August and his confidence was clearly boosted with two further titles won at big events in Beijing and Vienna, both at the hands of Daniil Medvedev after the Russian had beaten him in their first two finals this year in Miami and Rotterdam.

THE PREDICTION

If gut feeling alone were taken as gospel in tournament predictions it seems reasonable to suggest that in-form home favourite Jannik Sinner wins this group stage match and then loses to Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. However, the Italian’s record so far in this match-up is far from convincing, with two of their three encounters falling in straight sets for Djokovic who clearly greatly respects Sinner’s tennis with a no nonsense approach. That makes backing Djokovic to earn at least a set the suitably cautious call and taking Sinner to earn at least a set the potentially shrewd move, so consider three sets a rather uncomfortable happy medium here.

BETTING TIP: TOTAL OF 3 SETS
