THE PREDICTION
This should be a lot of fun late on Friday night in the Italian Open’s amphitheatre-like Centre Court. Six-time Rome champion Novak Djokovic has endured his worst season in almost a decade as he seeks a first title of the season but he will be laser-focused on this campaign for two key reasons: to gather enough match practice to peak in time for Roland-Garros and to out-perform Rafael Nadal, to whom he lost a modern classic in the final here three years ago. The 36-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters last month before a shock first defeat to Casper Ruud, whom he beat to the Roland-Garros title last summer, but an extended break should see him refreshed and ready to go at this wide-open Rome draw with very few threats in Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’ absence.
World number 83 Corentin Moutet came back from a set down to beat Roman Safiullin on Thursday, using that second wind momentum only losing in qualifying can offer a player, and he will throw everything at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to face a potentially out-of-sorts Djokovic. The 25-year-old is at his best on clay, on which his left-handed trickery and world-class wind-up tactics can frustrate plenty of top players, but Djokovic should be too experience to suffer too long here. Djokovic beat Moutet in straight sets in their previous encounter at the Paris Masters back in 2019 but this could be a lot tougher if Moutet brings his maverick best to win over neutrals in the Roman crowd. Back Djokovic, who will savour ousting a disruptor, to win in straight sets all the same.
TIP: NOVAK DJOKOVIC TO WIN 2-0
