THE PREDICTION

World number 109 Alexandre Muller brought next-to-no form into the Italian Open but he has since beaten two recent clay champions from a set down to stand up and counted in Rome. The 27-year-old looked at his best on clay last spring, finishing runner-up to Roberto Carballes Baena in Marrakech amidst success on the Challenger circuit, but victories over Bucharest champion Marton Fucsovics and now Madrid champion Andrey Rublev, snapping the Russian’s seven-match winning streak, make this a very difficult call against world number 24 Nicolas Jarry.

28-year-old Jarry was in the form of his career this time last season, winning the Geneva Open before a run to the last 16 at Roland-Garros, but he has laboured for most of his wins so far in 2024. A comeback over Stefano Napolitano on Monday is a good result in these conditions, considering home advantage counting against him, but the Chilean has not really looked himself since losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters late last year. It is hard not to underestimate Muller, given the Frenchman’s season so far, but back him to earn at least a set on merit to leave the victor of this first encounter up to chance.

TIP: ALEXANDRE MULLER TO WIN A SET
