26-year-old Nick Kyrgios is making big gains back into the top 100 of the ATP world rankings after a third-successive straight-sets victory at the Miami Open. The former world number 13 has conceded just eight games to Andrey Rublev and Fabio Fognini over his last two rounds in a welcome return to the kind of level he can produce over a tournament with some rhythm behind him. Kyrgios won the Australian Open Men’s Doubles title alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis in January and the ‘Special K’s’ have reached the quarter-finals at the Miami Open.
JANNIK SINNER
World number 11 Jannik Sinner came back from a set down to beat Pablo Carreno Busta in a thriller on Sunday, his second three-setter of the campaign so far. The Italian finished runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz here last season and the Pole was the last player to beat him on tour this year in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Sinner won a first ATP 500 event at the Washington Open last summer with five titles already won before his 21st birthday a remarkable achievement.
THE PREDICTION
Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios were due to face-off for a first time at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago before the Italian pulled out of the tournament. The 20-year-old came back from a set down against Pablo Carreno Busta to look in searing form by the end of the contest but with Kyrgios in this form it is a wonder if he will get the chance to come back. Kyrgios’ ATP world ranking has never been a suitable method of monitoring his level – a straight-sets dismissal of Andrey Rublev in the second round is – and so backing him to win at least a set here looks a reasonable way to avoid picking an overall winner.
