THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Nick Kyrgios will move back inside the top 30 on the ATP tour on Monday after reaching the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over friend and compatriot and Alex de Minaur. The former world number 13 is riding a nine-match winning streak after claiming the seventh ATP title of his career at the Washington Open, where he also took the Men’s Doubles title alongside Jack Sock. The Aussie is still full of the on-court anguish that we have grown accustomed to seeing but more of it has been directed at himself, or himself via his box, in recent weeks and that is as good a sign as anything that his self-belief has increased since reaching the Wimbledon final last month.

World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz is one of only seven players to have beaten Kyrgios this season, coming back from a set down to oust the Aussie in the semi-finals on his way to the title back in June. The 25-year-old has struggled through two three-setters this week so far against top 40 opponents in Emil Ruusuvuori and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, with tiebreaks in each, and that gives us a suitable alternative to having to pick a winner here. Back Kyrgios to win at least a set, as the likelier of two very capable victors, and add at least a tiebreak. Kyrgios made himself tournament favourite here in Montreal when he beat the reigning champion Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16.
