THE PREDICTION

The Netherlands had to dig deep against Group D minnows Finland on Wednesday after Botic van de Zandschulp continued his poor tour form in defeat to Otto Virtanen, with world number 24 Tallon Griekspoor saving the day in straight sets over Emil Ruusuvuori. The Dutch have an excellent doubles pairing in seasoned tour pros Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop that they can count on but it still went down to the wire in three sets to see them win the tie 2-1 and that dropped point could come back to bite them at the end of the week.

USA similarly dropped a point where they should have coasted, with world number 11 Frances Tiafoe falling to Croatia’s Davis Cup secret weapon Borna Gojo in two surprising sets on Wednesday. Mackenzie McDonald stepped in to fill for second option Tommy Paul in the opening match to oust Dino Prizmic with relative ease to take a 1-0 lead and that saw another doubles decider edge the Americans’ way, with new doubles number one Austin Krajicek partnering well alongside US Open champion Rajeev Ram in three sets.

It is likely that world number 14 Tommy Paul comes back in as second option today to face Botic van de Zandschulp and whilst the Dutchman will be eager to make amends for his poor start on Wednesday he looks devoid of the self-belief that saw him maintain a steady top 30 position for much of last season. 28-year-old Mackenzie McDonald may well be trusted to continue his good work at a career-high ATP world ranking of 39th but there is little doubt that Frances Tiafoe will be ready to bounce back strongly against Tallon Griekspoor. Tiafoe overcame the in-form Dutchman in three sets exactly a month ago at the Cincinnati Masters to look capable of an easier win here and that should see the US win the tie 2-0. A doubles decider would certainly be a thriller between two of the best pairs in the entire tournament and if it came to that it could be argued that the Dutch duo have the better Davis Cup experience as a partnership. Back the US to win the tie but if this goes to a decider consider a one off on the Netherlands to cause an upset.
