THE LOWDOWN

NAOMI OSAKA

Former world number one Naomi Osaka came back from an early break point to dominate proceedings against last week’s Istanbul Open winner Anastasia Potapova for just three games conceded. The 24-year-old is at her least effective on clay, as a poor record at Roland-Garros can attest to, but she has been working on developing her game this season and remains a top four player on all-but ranking. Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion with two each won at the Australian Open and US Open as well as a two-time Masters champion from Beijing in 2019 and Indian Wells the year before.

SARA SORRIBES TORMO

World number 47 Sara Sorribes Tormo overcame a tough opener against a returning Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets on Friday. The 25-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Istanbul Open last week before defeat to eventual champion Anastasia Potapova but she won in the Women’s Doubles alongside Marie Bouzkova for some excellent clay form.

THE PREDICTION

Naomi Osaka has won both tour matches against Sara Sorribes Tormo with a straight-sets victory at Wimbledon in 2017 and a three-set result at this very stage of the Madrid Open three years ago but the Spaniard took the head-to-head record to 2-1 with a win on clay at the Fed Cup in 2020. Sorribes Tormo is probably at her best on this surface but if there is a clay tournament out there that Osaka could win it is Madrid, where the altitude favours big-servers such as herself. The Japanese star is still an anomaly on tour as she looks to reintegrate herself but reaching the Miami Open final last time out came ahead of schedule. Take Osaka to win outright, with three sets possible.
