THE LOWDOWN
NAOMI OSAKA
Former world number one Naomi Osaka beat Astra Sharma in straight sets in an altogether more encouraging performance than her loss to Veronika Kudermetova at Indian Wells. The four-time Grand Slam champion will have taken notice of Ash Barty’s retirement and it could just be the spur she needs to get back to where she belongs - at the top of the game. Osaka owns two Masters titles from the 2019 Beijing open and Indian Wells in 2018.
ANGELIQUE KERBER
World number 15 Angelique Kerber very nearly beat eventual Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek last time out in a welcome return to form. The 34-year-old won the 13th title of her career, and first since 2018, at last season’s Bad Homburg Open after some years in the wilderness but contracting covid-19 right at the start of 2022 set her progress back some way. Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion but she has yet to win a Masters title, finishing runner-up on three occasions.
THE PREDICTION
This is a world class second round match to witness for lucky Miami Open-goers on Thursday between two former world number ones in Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber. Both are a way off where they would like to be right now for a myriad of reasons but Osaka is likely to have been motivated by Ash Barty’s retirement in ways we are yet to see on court and there could be a marked improvement in her performance here. Kerber is possibly the best defender on tour right now and she has used her skills to great effect against Osaka over the years, winning the last four meetings against the Japanese star to lead 4-1 in their head-to-head record. Back the German to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
