THE LOWDOWN

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

World number 77 Miomir Kecmanovic shut out the noise surrounding his opening match with Novak Djokovic to beat the world number one’s replacement Salvatore Caruso in straight sets. The 22-year-old is much better than his current ranking suggests, with perhaps some confidence issues hampering him over the last year or so, but avenging Djokovic’s treatment in Melbourne will be a huge motivational factor here. Kecmanovic has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam but he has won an ATP title at the Kitzbuhel Open back in 2020.

TOMMY PAUL

24-year-old Tommy Paul is up to his career-high ATP world ranking of 41st after some superb form over the last few months and a first ATP title won at the Stockholm Open last season. The American beat Mikhail Kukushkin in comfortable straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a third time, with his five-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov at this stage back in 2020 by far his best showing at a major to date.

THE PREDICTION

This is a tough one now with the extra motivation behind Miomir Kecmanovic to avenge Novak Djokovic’s deportation. In normal service in-form Tommy Paul should be backed to win this outright considering he has reached at least the quarter-finals of both warm-up events this month, losing to Adelaide 1 champion Gael Monfils and another in-form player in Marin Cilic at Adelaide 2. Kecmanovic is at his best on the clay but like Paul he possesses a great all-court game and confidence has looked to be his downfall over the last season more than anything. Take Paul to win at least two sets here but leave the winner up to chance in a match that could go to five quite easily.
