THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Tommy Paul beat Carlos Alcaraz in three thrilling sets in the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters last week, doing so for successive seasons after stunning the Spaniard in Montreal last year. The 26-year-old struggled to match that intensity in a loss to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals but he should be targeting a deep run on a home court in Cincinnati with the home crowd there to bolster him. World number 41 Miomir Kecmanovic takes a negative 20-22 record for 2023 into the Cincinnati Open but he leads Paul 2-0 in their head-to-head with straight-set results over the American at the US Open in 2020 and at the Australian Open last season. The 23-year-old has endured an odd season of peaks and troughs but he looked in reasonable shape in Toronto, beating Cristian Garin in three sets before a defeat in three to Hubert Hurkacz. There could be something of a comedown for Paul in this opener but it would be a surprise to see him crash out after last week’s exploits. Take Paul to earn his first set from Kecmanovic as the likelier of two capable winners to leave the result up to chance.
