THE LOWDOWN

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

World number 60 Miomir Kecmanovic proved himself a serious threat at his best in these conditions with a comeback from 2-1 down to oust last season’s semi-finalist Tommy Paul. The 24-year-old has played 14 sets already in Melbourne after ousting Yosuke Watanuki in four and then overcoming another powerful adversary in 24th seed Jan-Lennard Struff in five in the second round. Kecmanovic set a career-high ATP world ranking of 27th this time last year but inconsistency all season saw him drift away from a rightful place inside the top 40.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number two Carlos Alcaraz was in total control of his third round match with Jerry Shang before the Chinese youngster was forced to retire injured in the third. 20-year-old Alcaraz is through to the second week at the Australian Open for the first time after missing out last season through injury. The Spaniard was due to enter as the top seed in 2023 after winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open the year before but he returned from injury to stun four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in five sets last summer to fully announce himself a star.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling clash between two fit young players who love a varied scrap from the baseline. Alcaraz had to come back from a tiebreak down to beat Kecmanovic in their only previous encounter in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells in 2022, when the Serb was at the peak of his powers on a hardcourt, but the Spaniard has since come on leaps and bounds from that already elite place. The world number two is still far from his best level here in Melbourne, though, to suggest that sets could go both ways and the sensible concession is taking him to win outright. You could consider adding a tiebreak, with two played in their previous encounter.

TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN
