THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Milos Raonic finished runner-up to Andy Murray here in 2016 in his only Grand Slam final, with a semi-final exit in 2014 and back-to-back quarter-finals reached in 2017 and 2018. The 32-year-old’s last full season on tour saw him end 2020 as world number 17, with his defeat to Jordan Thompson in the round of 16 at ‘s-Hertogenbosch two weeks ago just his 14th competitive match since the start of 2021 due to a series of debilitating injuries that almost ended his career. It remains to be seen if the current world number 840 can return to the tour proper but he is likely to perform well in this opener, at least initially, with so many memories from SW19 to spur him on. Raonic beat world number 159 Dennis Novak in four sets in the third round here back in 2018 but things have vastly changed since. Novak qualified well this week for some much0needed match practice on grass and sets seem likely to go both ways. Back Raonic to win the first set, or at least a set, to leave the victor up to chance.
