THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Yoshihito Nishioka will start a Grand Slam as a seeded player for the first time in his career after suddenly finding the form of his life late last season. The Japanese number one has always drawn that ‘tricky’ label as a diminutive left-hander with a game designed to maximise his pace but it all came together at the Citi Open in August where he eventually finished runner-up to Nick Kyrgios after victories over five top 40 players, including top seed Andrey Rublev. Nishioka claimed the second ATP title of his career at the Korea Open in October, beating Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov that week, and he stunned Holger Rune in the first round of Adelaide 1 last week en-route to a semi-final exit there. World number 77 Mikael Ymer made the quarter-finals of Adelaide 2 this week with two great wins before a soft exit to eventual champion Soonwoo Kwon. The Swede has the potential to get up close to the top 30 himself one day but this first meeting looks like going Nishioka’s way over five sets in his current mood. Back Nishioka to earn at least two sets here as the likelier of two very capable victors.
