THE LOWDOWN

This is a monumental clash between two out-of-sorts stars in current world numbers even Stefanos Tsitsipas, who finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here last season, and former number six Matteo Berrettini, who finished runner-up to Djokovic at Wimbledon back in 2021. 27-year-old Berrettini has struggled with his fitness practically ever since that day in London, where he took the first set before a tight defeat to the all-time Men’s Singles record-holder, and he comes into Melbourne with more doubts than ever after retiring injured from his last match on tour in the second round of the US Open last summer. Berrettini reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in July, once again taking the first set from an eventual champion in a four-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz there, to briefly show his potential but it feels as if his body has failed him one too many times to ever really recover – in much the same way that the unfortunate Juan Martin del Potro dissipated from the sport.

25-year-old Tsitsipas has struggled with his own injury issues over the past 18 months or so but his fall from a previous high of world number three seems to be a mentality issue. The Greek burst onto the scene as a fearless, swashbuckling rising star but he has had his confidence heavily knocked by years of battling the ‘Big Three’ – particularly Novak Djokovic, who also bested Tsitsipas from two sets down to win Roland-Garros in 2021. Tsitsipas picked up one ATP 250 title last season, simply not good enough for a top 10 mainstay, and he lost two of three singles matches at the United Cup last week to start 2024 in worse form than he left 2023, where he finally found some rhythm before a semi-final exit to Grigor Dimitrov in Paris.

THE PREDICTION

Tsitsipas leads Berrettini 3-0 in their head-to-head record but it feels like the pair have rarely faced off at their respective best at the same time. There has been at least a tiebreak in all three of their encounters and that looks to be the totally sensible way to avoid a result here. You could also consider a one-off on this match to see five sets, even go the distance.

TIP: OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS
