THE LOWDOWN

MATTEO BERRETTINI

World number six Matteo Berrettini was forced to retire from his last match in the first round of the Mexican Open. He lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the Rio Open last month just one month after beating the Spaniard in five sets at the Australian Open on his way to a semi-final exit there to Rafael Nadal. 25-year-old Berrettini finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last summer after winning his first ATP 500 title at Queen’s Club.

HOLGER RUNE

18-year-old Holger Rune set a career-high ATP world ranking of 86th this week despite a difficult start to the season. The Danish prospect is at his best on the clay but he grabbed one of the best results of his young career on Friday with a straight-sets victory over an out-of-sorts Ugo Humbert.

THE PREDICTION

This first meeting between Matteo Berrettini and Holger Rune will be an intriguing one but straight off the bat it is well worth leaving out of an accumulator after the Italian pulled out of his last match. Berrettini also struggled with injury at the ATP Finals last November but his run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in between two fitness issues is testament to his powerful game. Holger Rune is likely a future top 10 player with a penchant for the clay but if Berrettini turns up fit to play here he can be backed to beat the youngster outright.
